Last night Electra X asked me why I wasn’t out with my buddies Björn (Combichrist) and Eric (Catastrophe Ballet) as planned. I replied with something that most musicians I met in my life don’t seem to understand: if you don’t stay in and work on your tracks when everyone is going out – I highly doubt that you will get anywhere. Inspiration can not be forced. If it is there, you have to capture it. In my case that sometimes means not going out for weeks, being grumpy if things don’t work like I want them to and generally focussing on things that most people will never understand. Like listening to the same 4 bar loop on repeat for 8 hours in a row. Does it drive me nuts? Sometimes. Is it necessary? Totally!
Partying and meeting people is also very necessary and everyone who knows me knows that I like going out. After all, you can’t be inspired if all you see is your apartment (unless you only want to sing about how alone you are, hehe). But you have to recognize when it is time to get serious and work on your art. If that means saying “no” to your friends, then that’s ok in my book. Also: some of the happiest moments in my life are when a new song starts to take the shape that I envisioned for it.
Luckily my friends understand all that.
This is my studio where I hide:

It’s easy to lose track of time here.
Make the most of your life and if that means staying in and being alone when everybody is out partying – so be it. In the end, I know that I will be making myself and other people happy with my music …
